Welcome To My Skincare Cult

Yes hello and welcome. You have entered a brief introduction to becoming a member of Kayla’s Skincare Cult. Many are a part of it and hopefully our numbers continue to grow. We start lightly with our information, basics if you will, as to not overwhelm you with knowledge.

Soon you shall too be a master of caring for your skin, which takes care of you so well it’s only fair to return the favor.

1.The Korean 10 step method — I'm sure you’re so sick of hearing about this by now. But it works. You don’t necessarily have to do all 10 steps every night (ain’t nobody got time for that) but having a good solid routine is crucial. Here’s my nighttime steps:

  • Makeup remover
  • Acne cleanser
  • Gentle cleanser (like Cetaphil)
  • Toner
  • Serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Eye cream

That’s only seven, and almost half of them are ensuring my face is properly cleansed while I’m in the shower.

In the mornings I only cleanse once and obviously don’t use makeup remover. When you adjust these steps based on time of day/how much stress your skin is under (makeup, sweat, hormones, sun exposure) it really isn’t as daunting as it might seem. I believe in you!

2. Fat Supplements — Okay hear me out. I am not telling you to go eat Crisco. Fats are not evil and unsaturated fats are AMAZING for your body. Not only do they play a part in basic bodily functions but they also plump and nourish the skin, reducing fine lines and other signs of damage. I’m currently taking

  • Flaxseed oil
  • Fish oil
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Evening Primrose oil (just a heads up this one can mess with hormones, check with your health care person if you’re worried or have a pre-existing condition in that department)
  • Coconut oil

I can do an entire article on why fats are good for you. So let’s move on.

3. Hylauronic Acid and Vitamin C — There’s a reason these little angels are everywhere right now. They’re incredible. My skin has never looked or felt better. However, learn from my mistakes and remember these things when using these products:

Hylauronic acid does not work unless there is a source of moisture to draw from. I was using three or four products that contained this at once and my skin had never been drier. If your skin isn’t naturally oily you need to add some sort of moisturizer or oil with Hylauronic acid for it to be your friend.

Vitamin C deteriorates in sunlight. Any products you use need to be stored in a container that blocks light OR you need to keep it in a dark place. Honestly though, personally, I don’t trust the shipping/stocking process enough to buy anything Vitamin C related in a clear bottle.

My best results have come from a Vitamin C serum and a moisturizer with Hylauronic Acid.

4. Retinol and AHAs — Here are some great friends that need to be treated with care. These lil guys make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure, meaning you can actually sunburn more easily if you don’t take extra care while using these. THAT BEING SAID--they are totally worth it

Retinol is Vitamin A and a lot of it. I like to think of it as a little booster that makes your skin regenerate faster.

It plumps up fine wrinkles and can clear up discoloration and acne. However, it can cause dryness and peeling. I had a very highly concentrated prescription retinoid at one point and the best way I combated the peeling was hydrating, easing my skin into the intensity, and chemical exfoliation.

AHAs — Alpha Hydroxy Acids are the very chemical exfoliators I was talking about!

The most common one I see around is Glycolic acid (like in Pixi Glowtonic) and it is incredible y’all. Chemical exfoliation isn’t as scary as it sounds, it’s actually better for your skin than physical exfoliators (I’m looking at you St Ives Apricot Scrub). The best way I can describe chemical exfoliation is like river rocks. The water moves over it and over time the rock becomes smooth because the water gently eroded the jagged and imperfect parts of the rock away. That’s what AHAs can do for skin. Gently exfoliating away dry skin, clogged up gunk in your pores, and reveal the glowing gorgeous skin beneath.

5. Don’t Give In To Peer Pressure — What the heck is this about? This is arguably one of the most important steps to having a good skincare routine.

Stop letting people tell you what color your skin needs to be. Whether you’re an Elizabethan Scottish Lass or a Nigerian Princess or anywhere in between YOUR SKIN IS THE COLOR IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL. Do NOT bleach it, do NOT tan it.

Skin bleach and UV rays destroy your skin and the long term damage is absolutely never worth it. Letting yourself feel beautiful in the skin you’re in will encourage you to protect it and treat it like it deserves. Which leads me to...

6. Bitch, Wear Your Sunscreen — Do you think this is a joke? Do you think because you’re inside all day you’re safe from cancer-causing rays? BECAUSE YOU ARE WRONG. LITERALLY IT IS NOT HARD FIND A SUNSCREEN THAT WORKS FOR YOU THAT IS BETWEEN SPF 30-50 AND JUST PUT IT ON I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU ARE FIGHTING ME ON THIS JUST DO IT.

I’m sorry to be aggressive. But it’s because I care about you and want you to live a long and healthy life, full of joy and beauty. But I digress.

Thank you for reading this introduction to my cult. We are so happy to have you here and there are plenty more articles and resources to come.

Bye lovelies.
